Keonjhar: An elephant herd on Wednesday wreaked havoc in some villages of Champua block in the district. The jumbos destroyed many houses and devoured the midday meal materials stored in the kitchen of a school.
The herd of nearly 15 elephants damaged many houses at Jyotipur, Parudiposi and Bardhana villages under the Champua Forest Range. Besides, they broke the boundary wall of the Jyotipur Upper Primary School and ate away the MDM materials stored in the kitchen of the school.
Irate locals said the elephants wreak havoc every year and destroy crops and properties, but Forest Department personnel are yet to find a solution to the menace.However, after getting information, the forest officials reached the village and tried to drive off the elephants and promised to provide compensation to the affected people.
Champua Deputy Forest Ranger Pitambar Nayak said, “The elephants have damaged some crops and houses. They also ate food from a school. People are complaining and we are trying to arrange for compensation after assessing damage.
