Jayalalithaa suffers cardiac arrest, shifted to ICU

Jayalalithaa suffers cardiac arrest

Tamil Nadu: State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa (aged 68 years) suffered a cardiac arrest late on Sunday evening at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. She was under treatment in the hospital since September 22.

The 68-year-old leader suffered the cardiac arrest hours after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)  said that she will return home soon as an AIIMS expert team has confirmed that she has completely recovered after over two months of hospitalization. In a later statement, the hospital said she had been placed on extracorporeal membrane heart assist device or life support device and was being treated by a team of expert doctors and critical care specialists. Dr Richard Beale from London was also being consulted who had flown down earlier to supervise the 68-year-old’s treatment and now has concurred with the line of treatment by the cardiologists and pulmonologists of the hospital here.
The hospital authorities asked the public to pray for the politician’s urgent recovery. A huge rush was seen in front of the hospital. Supporters including many political leaders on Sunday visited the Apollo Hospital to enquire about the condition of Jayalalithaa even as special prayers were held for her good health across Tamil Nadu.

Around 300 policemen were present in front of the hospital where she is undergoing treatment. Subsequently, even Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were deployed on the streets of Chennai.

Meanwhile, Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa (her brother Jayakumar’s daughter), residing at UK arrived at the hospital where she was apparently not allowed to see her ailing aunt. She told mediapersons she had been instructed not to speak to anyone regarding Jayalalithaa and her health condition.
