Irate women ransack liquor distillery in Nuapada
Nuapada: Irate women of Khariar town ransacked a country liquor distillation unit (bhatti) located at Chindaguda village near here and destroyed hundreds of liquor pouches.
Hundreds of women members of different SHGs of Dhobapada, Nilzibandhpada and Puttupada of Khariar reached the bhatti at about 11 am and burnt a temporary shed in front of the bhatti used by drunkards for sitting and drinking. The bhatti manager and the labourers fled from the site, sensing trouble.
“We have been demanding closure of the illegal country liquor shops (kothi) in our localities, but the Excise and police administrations are not responding. This bhatti is the source of all troubles, as it is supplying liqour to the khotis; so we are destroying it,” said the women.
It is learnt that the women have reported about the illegal shops to the Excise department several times. Some liquor venders have also been arrested and forwarded to the court. But getting bail from the courts, they are starting their illegal business again.
The women were later pacified by the Khariar police, which arrived with women police. IIC, Khariar Sadanand Pujhari and the SDPO assured the women to take appropriate steps against the illegal vendors.
