Nabarangpur: A one-month-old child died while undergoing treatment after being branded with hot bangle in Papadahandi block of Nabarangpur district in the wee hours of Friday.
According to sources, the deceased was identified as the son of Ram Jani and Bharati of Petuguda village under Papadahandi block in the district.
About 10 days back, the child was down with stomach ache and cough following which his mother branded him with hot bangle in his stomach 19 times to cure the ailment.
On Thursday evening, the infant could not breathe properly following which his family members took him to the district headquarters hospital. However, the infant succumbed at around 1.30 am on Friday, said additional district medical officer (ADMO) Sanjit Patnaik.
“We have informed the police in this regard and action will be taken as per law,” Patnaik added.
While the infant’s mother admitted that she had branded the child with hot bangle, her father-in-law claimed a quack had branded the child.
Notably, former collector Rasmita Panda had launched a campaign named Jyoti to create awareness among people against the superstitious belief. However, it did little to eradicate the practice in the district.
