Lucknow: At least 97 people were killed and more than 100 have been injured when 14 coaches of Indore-Patna Express derailed near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh on the wee hours of Sunday morning.
The tragic incident transpired at around 3 am near Pukhrayan, about 100 kms from Kanpur, when the most passengers were sleeping.
Rescue operations are under way and the death toll is expected to rise. NDRF teams, GRP, a team of Army doctors and 250 police officials, locals are carrying out the rescue and relief operations on a war footing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences saying he was deeply pained by the loss of lives and his thoughts with the bereaved families. President Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi also offered their condolences to the deceased.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has ordered a probe into the tragedy incident.
PM Modi announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for kin of each deceased, Rs 50,000 for seriously injured. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu announced ex-gratia Rs 3.5 lakhs each for the families of deceased, Rs 50,000 for those critically injured and Rs 25,000 for those who sustained minor injuries. Likewise UP chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has also announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for families of those killed in derailment and Rs 50,000 for seriously injured.
Though the cause of the derailment is not known as of now, sources said the accident was caused by rail fracture. However the exact reason would be clarified after investigation.
