Lucknow: It took 15 long years for India to regain the Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup. The junior team defeated Belgium 2-1 in the final at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday to win the title. India had won this trophy last in 2001.
Right from the start of the match India opened its goal account. In first six minutes, Gurjant Singh scored and the team led 1-0. After 16 minutes, India got another chance for goal and raises the lead 2-0 against Belgium.
On the other hand Belgium team tried to score a goal but wasn’t successful thanks to the commendable defence of the home team. Belgian player Fabris Van Boakaizik managed to score a goal. In 78 minutes, he converted a penalty corner into goal. But in the end India won the title leading the score 2-1.
India became the second team after Germany to win the Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup more than once. President Pranab Mukharjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel and many prominent persons congratulated Junior Hockey team for their winning.
