Rajkot : India managed to salvage a hard fought draw in the first of the five match test series against England here in Rajkot thanks to all important partnerships between Kohli, Jadeja and R Ashwin.
After the massive first innings of 537 from the visitors, the hosts retaliated with centuries from Murali Vijay and Chestaswar Pujara to amass 488 runs on board by the end of third day.
England returned strongly with century from Captain Alastair Cook and good 82 runs from Hasseb Hameed to wrap up their second innings declaring at 260-3.
By the time India were put to bat it was just go for a draw or lose it situation for them since target of 310 in last half day was too much for the hosts but England kept coming to build up more pressure right from the outset by dismissing Gautam Gambhir at 0.
Subsequently, the Three Lions continued their momentum using Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali to create best chance of winning the match.
There were moments of anxiety for Indian fans as the hoists were reduced to 71-4 but captain Kohli usually known for his relentless fight backs kept cool and made good use of valuable contribution from Ashwin and Jadeja to seer off the final overs at the end of the day 5.
