New York: Cosmetics mogul and reality television star Kim Kardashian West has received the Influencer Award at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA 2018) Fashion Awards in New York.
In her acceptance speech she, however, expressed shock to receive the award. “I’m kind of shocked I’m getting a fashion award when I’m naked most of the time,” she said, adding “this is seriously such an honour.”
The 37-year-old also addressed her critics, including a former publicist, who had expressed doubt whether she could have an impact on the fashion world.
“It was seven years ago when I had a publicist and she asked what were my goals, what were my dreams. I said I just wanted to be on the cover of a fashion magazine and she told me to let’s get some realistic goals because that will never happen,” Kardashian West told the audiences.
Kardashian West told the audience that she sent an “autographed copy” of her first Vogue cover to the publicist when it came out.
She went on to say that it’s really a trip to her that she was getting an award for fashion which she always loved. “Thank you so much for this, it means a lot,” she said.
Meanwhile, designer Tommy Hilfiger, a CDFA board member, explained why the council had chosen to honour Kardashian West in a statement on the CDFA website: “Kim is the most important and powerful influencer in the world. Her reach extends far beyond her own brands. Every time she wears, posts or talks about a fashion brand, there is an immediate and significant increase in both awareness and sales.”
Kardashian covered the April 2014 issue of Vogue with her husband Kanye West, which sparked backlash at the time among critics who didn’t think Kardashian West deserved the influential cover spot.
