Koraput: A senior finance manager of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has allegedly misappropriated crores of rupees by producing fake vouchers in the past couple of years, the police said today.
A complaint has been filed with Sunabeda police against the accused manager, identified as Bhaben Maiti, who is reportedly on the run.
According to reports, Maiti who is authorised to deposit expenditure bills upto Rs 5 lakh have allegedly withdrawn a huge amount of money by depositing fake vouchers in the past few years.
The matter came to light during an audit after which Maiti was asked to produce the vouchers and related documents of the amount withdrawn by him at different times. However, the accused failed to produce the documents.
Acting on the direction of HAL executive director, the audit team and internal vigilance team had detained the accused manager for questioning on Saturday night. During the detention, he was directed to deposit all the required documents of monetary transactions in the HAL office by Sunday morning.
However, Maiti instead of coming to the office, fled the area. Following which, the HAL authorities filed a FIR against him with Sunabeda police.
Later on Sunday, when the police and HAL internal vigilance team jointly raided Maiti’s quarter at Zone-4 of HAL township, they found burnt fragments of currencies estimated to the tune of Rs 1.67 lakh, land documents and a luxurious car worth Rs 18 lakh, informed, Sunabeda SDPO Niranjan Behera.
On the basis of the complaint, a case (152/18) has been registered, while Sunabeda inspector-in-charge Mamata Panigrahi was handed over the investigation charge of the case, SDPO Behera further informed.
