Bhubaneswar: The state Government on Wednesday has released 33 convicts from different jails across the State after remission of their life sentence.
The remission of their life sentence was approved by the State Sentence Review Boards (SSRBs) on Monday.
ADG (Prisons) Arun Kumar Ray has that said they were released on the ground of good conduct. He said that the prisoners were released after receipt of approval from the state home department as the state government has the statutory right to do so on the basis of good conduct of the convicts.
As per sources, at present, nearly 16,000 prisoners (under trial prisoners and convicts) are lodged in 91 prisons in Odisha.
The released prisoners include inmates of Biju Patnaik open air (ashram) jail in Jamujhari, and Jharpara Jail in Bhubaneswar, and also from jails in Sundergarh, Balasore, Bolangir, Choudwar, Baripada, Puri and Jajpur.
Superintendent of Biju Patnaik open air (ashram) jail in Jamujhari, Rabindra Swain has said that in all over state, 132 prisoners will be released and in the first phase 33 are being released.
