Mumbai: INS Viraat, the world’s oldest aircraft carrier serving with Indian Navy will be decommissioned today at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The flagship has spent 30 years in service with Indian Navy and finally the era of Viraat has come to an end.
INS Viraat holds the Guinness world record for serving longest time as a warship which was first commissioned by the British Royal Navy on November 18, 1959 named as HMS Hermes.
However, Viraat had played a major role in Operation Jupiter 1989 and participated in Operation Parakram from 2001 when India and Pakistan got engaged in a standoff after the Parliament terror attack.
The ceremony of decommissioning will be attended by Naval personnel those who have served on the Oldest Warship in the past and some British officers.
