New Delhi: At least two people were killed and five others injured when a portion of the massive Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi caved in on Friday afternoon.
Due to the cave-in, a car and two two-wheelers fell into the Kondli canal which flows near the landfill site.
According to sources, 4 vehicles, which were moving on a nearby road, fell into the canal after a portion of the mountain of garbage came crashing down on them.
Two bodies, one including that of a girl, were found by the rescue team from the canal while five others were rescued safely and are now admitted to hospital.
The Ghazipur landfill site came up in 1984, and is the oldest of three landfills where Delhi’s garbage is dumped. The Ghazipur site caters to the waste generated in east Delhi, central Delhi and the old quarters of the city.
