Malkangiri: The officials of the revenue and excise department, Nagpur branch on Monday intercepted a coconut-laden truck and recovered ganja worth Rs 8 crore near Raipur in Chhattisgarh.
Acting on a tip-off, the officials intercepted the truck which was heading towards Madhya Pradesh from Malkangiri. The sleuths conducted a search and found the contraband was stashed inside the coconut sacks.
The cost of the seized ganja weighing 6, 545 kg was Rs 8 crore, the officials said, adding three smugglers who were transporting the contraband managed to escape from the spot.
However, the sleuths seized the truck and arrested the driver.
In a related case, police on Monday conducted a raid and seized ganja worth of Rs 10 thousand from a house at Bhagatpur under Khandapada police limits in Balasore district. One person was arrested in this connection.
The accused was identified as Ramesh Chandra Panda (46) of Bhagatpur.
Acting on a tip-off, a special team led by Karunashankar Tiwari conducted a raid on the house of Ramesh this morning at around 5 am. During the search operation police seized ganja weighing 2 kg from his house.
The police registered a case against him and further investigation is on. The accused was forwarded to the court today, an official said.
