Malkangiri: Excise sleuths on Thursday apprehended four youths while smuggling ganja on two bikes near Kudumulugumma in the districts and seized more than 45 kilo grams of contraband worth Rs 2 lakh from them.
The arrested persons have been identified as Bhima Majhi, 23, of Dangaguda, Ramachandra Khilla, 46, of Pedawada, Shyam Sundar Pangi, 22, of Alamgada and Jagatram Khilla, 28, of Dangaguda village in the district.
Acting on a tip-off, district Excise superintendent Ashok Kumar Seth along with a police team intercepted the youths speeding on two motorcycles with the contraband.
Upon searching more than 45 kilograms of ganja estimated to be worth around Rs 2 lakh was found stashed in four gunny bags from both the motorcycles, said the police adding, the contraband and the bikes have been seized.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the accused persons were smuggling the consignment to Chhattisgarh. They have been forwarded to the court, while further investigation is underway, said the police.
Notably, acting on the directions of Malkangiri Collector Manish Agarwal and SP Jagamohan Meena, the Excise department has been busting ganja smuggling racket in the area since the past couple of months.
