Bhubaneswar: Eminent freedom fighter Goura Chandra Mohapatra passed away at the age of 104 at Bhadrak district headquarters hospital today.
Mohapatra was suffering from old age related ailments and bed-ridden for a long time. After his condition deteriorated today, he was rushed to the DHH where he passed away at 5.55 pm.
Mohapatra was the son of Kanta Kabi Laxmikant Mohapatra. He was the youngest prisoner of Brahmapur jail in 1942. His sons Gurukalyan Mohapatra and Prabhukalyan Mohapatra are senior journalists.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled the death of veteran freedom fighter Mohapatra. “As a true Gandhian he has dedicated his entire life for the promotion of Gandhian values and dedicated himself for social upliftment. In his death, we lost one of the last pillars of the freedom movement,” the CM said. He conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab also condoled the death of the freedom fighter. “Very sad to hear about the demise of eminent freedom fighter Gour Chandra Mahapatra. He was not only a literary person and educationist but was a social reformer and organisational man. During my stay in Bhadrak and latter because of his involvement with Odisha Freedom Fighters, I have come in close contact with him and his family. I pray his soul rest in peace. I share my grief with Gurukalyan and Prabhukalyan and their family,” he said.
Health Minister Pratap Jena also condoled the death of the eminent freedom fighter. In his condolence message, Jena said, “Very sad to hear about the demise of eminent freedom fighter Gour Chandra Mahapatra.
He was not only a literary person and educationist but was a social reformer and organisational man.”
He prayed that his soul rests in peace and shared his grief with his family.
