Bolangir: Hundreds of farmers on Monday blocked two major roads including NH 26 alleging an insurance company for duping scores of farmers who suffered crop loss due to drought in Bolangir district last year.
While farmers from Agalpur village staged a road blockade at Rugudikhala, farmers from Saintala village blocked the NH 26 at Paikasamara chhak.
Following the road blockade vehicular communication to Titlagarh came to a grinding halt and hundreds of vehicles were left stranded on the road side for about four hours.
According to the agitating farmers, finance firm Cholamandalam took premiums from hundreds of farmers to provide insurance, in case of crop loss. However, during reimbursable the finance firm provided less compensation to the farmers.
They claimed that insurance firm has paid only 8 per cent of the compensation amount whereas the crop loss was more than 60 per cent.
On July 7, the farmers had submitted a memorandum to the district collector to take action against the finance firm. However, no actions were initiated in this regard following which the farmers took on to the street to press for their demands.
The agitators have also alleged that both the Centre and the state government have turned mute spectators to the issue, while the farmers are suffering heavy loss.
The agitators allowed vehicular movement on after the sub-Collector Bhairav Singh Patel and Saintala tehsildar held discussions with them and promised to look into the matter.
However, the farmers have threatened to intensify the stir, if the concerned officials fail to deliver justice to the duped farmers.
