Boudh: The farmer Balabh Dharei who committed suicide on Wednesday night did not take the step over farming issues but over a family problem, said district collector Madhusudan Mishra.
Dharei had consumed poison on Wednesday night after which he was admitted to the local hospital and died on Thursday morning. This tragic incident was another among the recent suicides by farmers in various districts like Bargarh, Balasore, Ganjam, Nabarangpur and Jajpur.
Earlier, in the suicide of Bargarh farmer Hadu Bagarti, the agriculture minister Pradeep Maharathy had initially claimed that he died over a family matter but the district administration had not even probed into the matter then. After protests in the Assembly for several days, the leader of Opposition even moved a privilege motion against the agriculture minister for stating wrong reports in the House.
Meanwhile, even in the Boudh farmer suicide, the neighbours and family members said Dharei was burdened with farming loans.
