Bolangir: A farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Kameimunda village under Turekela block in Bolangir district on Monday.
The deceased farmer has been identified as Sarat Majhi.
Majhi was rushed to Kantabanji hospital in critical condition by family members where the attending doctor declared him brought dead, sources said.
His family members said that Sarat had taken loan from private money lenders for farming. However, he suffered crop loss and was under pressure.
The real cause behind suicide of the farmer has not been established yet, nor has any government official confirmed that he took the extreme step following crop loss and loan burden.
The family members along with local activists and farmer leaders staged a road blockade putting the body on road and demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased farmer.
Efforts are on to contact concerned government officials in this regard.
