Family pressure to opt science drives P.N College girl to suicide

Khurda: The first year girl student of Prananath Autonomous College in Khurda committed suicide due to pressure from family to choose science over arts, police claimed on Thursday.

Swapnapriya Baliarsingh, a plus II first-year science student, was found hanging to a ceiling fan in her room at a private hostel yesterday.

The police recovered a suicide note from the scene in which the girl stated that she took the extreme step after she was forced to opt for science stream instead of arts by her family.

She further stated in the suicide note that she was unable to cope with the study pressure of the science course and ending her life.

Earlier on Wednesday, Swapnapriya’s parents had alleged that she was murdered, but the suicide note has confirmed that she had committed suicide.
