Bhubaneswar: Suryanarayan Rath, sub-inspector of excise of Nimapara in Puri district was caught red-handed by the vigilance sleuths on Tuesday while accepting illegal gratification of Rs 8,500 from a person.
Rath, who is holding additional charge of Pipili, was accepting the cash from Prasanna Kumar Palai of Chalisbatia village in Chandanpur police limits for deposing in favour of complainant in the court in connection with the excise case.
Accordingly, a trap was laid and Rath was caught red-handed by the vigilance officers of Bhubaneswar division when he was accepting the bribe from the complainant. The bribe money was recovered from the pant pocket of Rath and seized in presence of witnesses.
Both hands wash as well as pant pocket wash of Rath gave positive chemical reaction confirming acceptance and handling of bribe amount by him. His residential house at Puri town is being searched. Rath has been arrested and will be forwarded to the court.
Bhubaneswar Vigilance police registered a case in this regard under Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 and further investigation is underway.
In a related development, the vigilance sleuths arrested Lokanath Prasad Sahu, junior assistant in the office of the Junior Engineer, CESU Section Office, Rajkanika in Kendrapara district for demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs 5,000 from Monoj Kumar Rout of Gobindapur.
