Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of State Crime Branch on Monday arrested a fraudster who had availed a loan of Rs 3 lakhs from a bank in Cuttack by impersonating himself as a Junior Engineer.
The arrested, identified as Niranjan Satpathy of Bakutugaon village in Ganjam district had availed the loan by producing forged documents in collusion with Rabindra Kumar Jena, the Establishment Officer at the office of Chief Engineer of Drainage in Cuttack, police said.
In a statement, the EOW said, a case was registered on the plaint filed by Pranab Kumar Ray, Senior Manager of Allahabad Bank, Nayasarak Branch in Cuttack.
The complaint stated that 85 loanees have availed loans to the tune of Rs.2.26 Crores under “Sarala Loan” scheme during December 2009 to March 2010 on the basis of forged documents.
Earlier, 24 other accused persons have been arrested and forwarded to court in the connection. Besides, 26 other persons have also been arrested and released on bail on different dates as per the orders of Orissa High Court.
The Cuttack Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) has convicted accused Rabindra Kumar Jena after completion of trial against him.
While the accused was forwarded to Sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) in Cuttack today, further probe into the matter is underway, said the police.
