England breathe sigh of relief with 311 on board after shaky start

Rajkot : Touring England recovered from a shaky start to their campaign against India in the first of five test matches here in Rajkot thanks to a blistering  hundred from the young English run machine Joe Root and an almost century from Moeen Ali with a fighting 99.

After the visitors opted to bat having won the toss, a good 47 run partnership from captain Alasitair Cook and Haseeb Hameed was about to set up just when men in blue knocked out both the openers but first Root and then Ali after the lost of third wicket Ben Ducket at 13 managed to build up the innings slowly.

Root being the better with a top notch 124 off 180 balls and swiftly followed with Moeen Ali who is nearing his ton not out at 99 both making things harder for the hosts as England crossed 300 mark just before the stumps.

The pick of the bowlers has been off spinner R Ashwin who broke down the first order of the three lions while Umesh Yadav and Amit Mishra also took one wicket each.
