Eight killed, 2 injured in road accident; CM announces Rs 2L ex-gratia for each
Jagatsinghpur: In a heart-wrenching incident, eight persons were killed and two others sustained critical injuries in a road accident after an auto-rickshaw and a tipper collided head-on at Chandol Chhack on the Jagatsinghpur-Machhagaon road on Saturday morning.
The deceased and the injured were identified as residents of Singitalia village under the Machhagaon area in Jagatsinghpur district. They were returning home in an auto-rickshaw after attending Deba Snan Purnima rituals at Achyutananda Gaadi, Nemal in Cuttack district when the mishap occurred.
The accident was so severe that seven of the 10 persons, including a minor girl, died on the spot. The three injured were first rushed to the Jagatsinghpur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). However, they were shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack as their condition deteriorated. One of them succumbed to his injuries there.
The driver of the tipper fled the spot after the accident.
Locals staged road blockades at three places on the road demanding adequate compensation for families of the deceased. Vehicular movement was disrupted for hours.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep grief over the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of the kin of the each deceased. He also announced free medical treatment for all the injured.
