DNA test

Cuttack: The frequent child theft incidents at SCB Medical here has caused the Commissionerate Police to worry seriously. The police have asked hospital authorities for conducting DNA test for paternity of two infants and couples in a child lifting case.

The Mangalabag police of the city moved the court to give permission so that the paternity tests for two newborns be conducted. The infants were stolen by a woman from SCB on March 8 and January 5 but she was caught by Commissionerate Police on Saturday.

Earlier, on Wednesday a day old male child delivered by Puspa Patra of Dhenkanal district was stolen  by the woman when her husband and sister in law had taken the baby to the vaccination centre near the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department for immunization. The woman had acted as an ASHA worker and took the baby to give polio drops but did not return.

The woman, Manashi Samal alias Mamina of Nimasahi under Purighat police limits, was arrested on Saturday in a police raid. Two stolen infants were also rescued including the child stolen on Wednesday and another male child stolen on January 5. The babies will be given to their respective parents after the DNA test.
