Koraput: The Department of English Language and Literature of Central University of Orissa (CUO) on Wednesday organised a panel discussion on the topic titled, ‘Changing Contours of English Studies’.
The discussion session was carried out by CUO vice-chancellor Professor Sachidananda Mohanty, Professor Manju Jaidka of Punjab University, Chandigarh and Sanjeet Kumar Das, Head of the Department, who gave the welcome address.
‘Crossing the Rubicon’, an anthology of poems by Swagatika Dash, a student of 3rd semester of English department, was launched at the event.
Professor Manju Jaidka recited the poems from the collection while VC Mohanty congratulated Swagatika for this achievement and invited others to publish such poetry.
The discussants shared slices of their experiences, in consonance with the topic.
Addressing the students, Mohanty said:” English is the gateway to the world.” He stressed on student-centric approach along with the improvement of teaching Literature based on technological advancement and infrastructural development.
Professor Mohanty urged the students to develop critical thinking and the power of imagination. He confirmed the existence of different versions of English and said, “Each version was the acknowledgment of linguistic diversity.”
The role of a teacher, according to Professor Mohanty, is to give insights and not information. He cited excerpts from his books to elucidate his viewpoint.
Meanwhile, Professor Jaidka cautioned the students not to look for shortcuts in literature.
The two experts narrated the evolution of English Studies in the country through their personal narratives and answered questions posed by the students.
Debasish Mishra, lecturer of the department concluded the session with a vote of thanks.
