Bhubaneswar: Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday wrote a letter to Union Minister of State, Tourism and Culture, Mahesh Sharma requesting him to send a team from the Ministry of Culture to identify a suitable place in the Barunei Fort for establishment of a Paika Rebellion memorial.
He had earlier asked the Centre to erect the proposed national monument in collaboration with the State government at the Barunei Fort.
Notably, The Centre has also decided to celebrate bicentenary of the Paika Rebellion throughout the year.
The Government of India had organised a function on July 20 at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi to celebrate completion of 200 years of the Paika Rebellion.
Barunei Fort was the seat of power of the Gajapati King of Khordha and the epicentre of Paika Rebellion.
