Puri: A devotee sustained injuries after he was allegedly assaulted by a servitor at Ananda Bazaar of Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri on Friday.
The victim, identified as Brajabandhu Biswal of Banapur area in Khurda district, lodged a complaint with Singhadwar police in this regard.
The incident took place when Biswal went to the Ananda Bazar of Srimandir along with his wife and daughter to eat Mahaprasad.
“The servitor got angry with me when I used water kept in a pitcher to wash my hands. Soon after, the servitor flew into a rage and started heating me. He also misbehaved with my wife and daughter” Biswal said.
An officer of Singhadwar police station said an inquiry has been launched into the matter and the accused servitor has been detained. He was being questioned, the officer added.
Notably, harassment of devotees by servitors is not uncommon at the 11th-century shrine. Earlier in June, a servitor was arrested for allegedly molesting a woman. The accused servitor, Santosh Kar, had allegedly touched the woman inappropriately when she went inside the temple for darshan along with her family members.
