Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh sentenced to 20 years in jail

Rohtak, Haryana:  Self-styled spiritual guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape of two women followers in 2002.

The CBI court has sentenced Ram Rahim Singh to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in each of two rape cases. The court, in an important demarcation, stated that the sentences will run consecutively and not concurrently. This makes the total punishment 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in jail.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh. 14 lakhs each to the two victims and 2 lakhs to be submitted in court.

The 50-year-old chief of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect reportedly broke down during the pronouncing of the quantum of punishment at a jail in Haryana’s Rohtak by Judge Jagdeep Singh.

The sentence was passed by the special CBI judge, in a makeshift court in the Sunaria jail where Ram Rahim had been lodged since his conviction on Friday.

Ram Rahim broke down and asked for forgiveness with folded hands when the sentence was read out. He then refused to leave the court room, in the jail library, said the report.

To sentence self-styled spiritual guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the judge arrived on a government helicopter this afternoon.

Justice Jagdeep Singh was escorted with thick security cover to a makeshift prison created within the jail located on the outskirts of Rohtak.

Justice Singh has been given special protection by the Haryana government.

The army is on standby and can enter the town, if needed, in about an hour, said military sources.
