Bhubaneswar: The city saw a series of events hosted to mark International Day of People with Disabilities (PwDs) on Saturday. While many organizations came forward to host activities for the disabled, the state department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) has also begun its celebrations for the occasion.
The day began with a marathon that was conducted from Kalinga Stadium in the city for disabled, senior citizens, athletes, students and general public. More than 3000 participants took part in the event that featured one km run for disabled, five km run for students and 10 km run for athletes.
Well known group Swabhiman led by Sruti Mohapatra hosted ‘Colours of Love’, a programme offering simulation activities, foot and mouth painting and quiz on disability and human chain at BJB College today.
The SSEPD department is hosting a two day exhibition at Adivasi ground here in the city for the occasion. The first day was inaugurated on Friday by SSEPD Minister Usha Devi. She said that the state has a population of around 12 lakh PwDs and the government has set up 140 special schools for such persons. Apart from schools, the government has also made arrangements for special department, special schemes towards bringing them to the main stream of the society.
Various government departments, NGOs and private organisations exhibited their products and services for such people by setting up around 61 stalls at the venue. Around 11 PwDs were awarded for their exemplary achievements in various fields.
Visually impaired and differently abled students who completed their PhD received Job Access With Speech software (JAWS), enabled laptops from the state government. Snehaprabha Lenka and Geetanjali Sahu were among the persons who received the laptops. Many visually and hearing impaired kids, autistic children and kids suffering from multiple disorders among many others took part at the event enthusiastically.
