Counter exchange of old notes ends, 500 bills can be used for emergency needs


Bhubaneswar: The Union Government on Thursday ended the counter exchange of demonetized currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 at Banks and Post Offices across the country. The deadline ends on November 24th midnight.

People can go to banks to deposit their old bills and draw cash under restriction of maximum withdrawal limit of Rs 24,000 per week, a government notification said.

Old Rs 500 ills can be used till December 15 for some emergency services especially for meeting expenses in governmental uses like paying water and electricity bills. Similarly, in government school and colleges payments can be made using old bills.

Meanwhile, toll tax collection has been stalled till December 2. It will resume from December 3 and continue till December 15. Likewise, use of Rs 1000 currencies has been completely banned.
