Cops foil dacoity bid, nab five in Ganjam


Ganjam: Police claimed to have foiled a dacoity attempt and arrested five persons near Ratanei hill in Chikiti area of Ganjam district late on Monday night.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of people assembled in an isolated place near the Ratanei hill and hatching a plan to loot Bamakei Utkal Grameen Bank, a police team swung into action and zeroed in on the dacoits.

The accused were identified as Surendra Swain, Arun Panda and Santosh Sabar of Anjiapalli in Berhampur and Kashinath Padhi and Anil Sahu of Gosani Nuagaon.

The police have seized facemasks, three swords, six crude bombs, three iron rods, lock breaking tools and Rs 1,050 in cash from their possession.

Addressing a press meet, inspector-in-charge Sujit Nayak said, “A case (50/18) has been registered against the accused persons under Sections 399, 402 of the IPC and Section 24(1b) of the Arms Act.”

He further said that the accused persons have been sent to jail after Digapahandi JMFC court rejected their bail plea.
