Bhubaneswar: Construction workers both under governmental and NGOs will mandatorily register themselves and pay cess, said Subash Singh, Chairman of Building and Other Construction Worker’s Welfare Board during a press meet here.
From now on construction workers and contractors have to compulsorily register their names under the board as per Section 7 of Orissa Labour Welfare Act 1996.
Subash said while earlier Labour Officer used to collect cess but from now on assistant executive engineer will do so. As of now there are 18 lakh construction workers in state who pay a yearly tax. But henceforth they will pay their yearly tax once in every three years.
The state government has targeted to increase the number of registered workers from 18 to 25 lakh. All assistant executive engineers have been asked to collect 1 per cent cess from workers from all departments.
Similarly 2500 families of workers will be provided pucca houses under Central Housing Scheme in each of the five municipal corporations, Singh said.
