Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik kick started the ‘Habisyali Brata Yojana’ through a video conference from the Secretariat here on Saturday.
The scheme is meant for the benefit of the thousands of women who throng the town during the month of Kartik, the holiest of all Hindu months.
Speaking during the launch of the programme, CM said provisions to increase the number of habisyalis or women pilgrims from next year will be ensured through this scheme.
Devotees generally women congregate in large numbers and spend the whole Kartik month living in different mutts or religious hostels inside Puri one of the sacred four Dhams in the country. They keep fast and offer Puja before sacred basil plants planted in pots called Tulasi Chaura.
It is believed that pilgrimage during the month absolves one of all sins and help soul to attain salvation.
