Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) have started joint drives clearing obstructions in recent days after the incessant rains and water-logging across the city.
So far places near ISKCON temple, Nayapalli Haza, Nayapalli Behera Sahi and Bhoi Sahi, along Drainage Channel no. 9, Science Park Basti for construction of Box Drain near Acharya Vihar, Ekamra Vihar and now structures along Drainage Channel No. 4 near Jaydeev Vihar Square were made encroachment-free.
The joint team today demolished a new structure near Somu’s Cave, where a structure was built on the same channel. Seven families were staying there on the edge of the channel.
It can be mentioned here that both the development and civic authorities have adopted a “Zero Tolerance Policy” towards the encroachment on secondary, tertiary and major drainage channels across the city following urban flooding and water-logging situations in several places of Bhubaneswar in the recent past.
The two-storeyed structure on the side of Airport-Nandankanan Road near Jaydev Vihar was completely demolished by a drive under the Central Eviction Monitoring Committee over Plot No. 2290 (part) affecting Master Plan Road and Drainage Channel No – 4 near Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT) side of Jaydev Vihar under the deployment of force from Saheed Nagar police station. The demolition order was passed by the ODA Court in UAP Case No. 439/2006.
The case was initiated against one Nrusingha Panigrahi, basing on the report of area `amin’ on September 8,2006 and after due hearing the demolition order passed by the OSD (ODA Act), BDA on November 16,2006 for demolition of the unauthorised G+1 structure over the above mentioned plot.
Two huge chain-mounted proclain machines were deployed today for the job. On Saturday the work had to be postponed due to rains. The remaining portion of the building will be demolished tomorrow.
Additional Commissioner, Enforcement, BDA Bhabani Sankar Chayani led the demolition drive. Zonal Deputy Commissioner (North) of BMC Subhransu Mishra, Inspector-in-Charge Saheed Nagar, police station Padmanav Pradhan and other officials, Enforcement Officer-II, BDA, Pramod Kumar Patro and Liaison Officer, BDA, Subhransu Sekhar Mohanty were present.
One platoon of gents APR force and one section of lady police force were present at site to maintain law and order during the demolition drive. Four enforcement squads, two from BDA and two from BMC were present.
Demolition near Naka gate
In another drive to send a strict message to encroachers of the major roads and drains in the city, the joint squad of BDA and BDA today started demolition on government Plot no – 2791 at Naka Gate.
Out of four asbestos roofed houses one was demolished. Announcement through public address system has been made for tomorrow eviction programme at same location. Now drain clearance work is continuing in that place by construction and demolition waste squad staff.
Meanwhile, the Squad-1 and 4 of BDA visited Jharana Basti near Sishu Bhavan and the enforcement staff warned the encroachers over the nearby drain to remove their construction immediately.
