Centre asks states and UTs to check mob lynching incident for child lifting rumours

New Delhi: The Centre directed all states and Union Territories to take all necessary measures to prevent incidents of mob lynching fueled by rumours of child lifting on social media across the country on Thursday.

“Centre has asked the states & UTs to take measures to prevent incidents of mob lynching fueled by rumours of child lifting circulating on social media. Ministry of Home Affairs has urged them to keep a watch for early detection of such rumours and initiate effective measures,” a Home Ministry spokesperson said.

“States & UTs have been asked to direct District Administrations to identify vulnerable areas and conduct community outreach programmes for creating awareness and building confidence,” he added.

They have also been directed to properly investigate the complaints of child abduction among the affected people.

On Tuesday, the government had directed WhatsAap to take immediate steps tp prevent the spread of “irresponsible and explosive messages.” WhatsApp has also been asked to immediately contain the spread of such messages.
