Berhampur: A boat ferrying 29 passengers in Chilika sank on Saturday leaving four, including a girl child, dead. The locals rescued 15 from the site while rescue operations are underway to find the remaining people who are missing now. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the dead.
The boat was carrying the passengers on the Chilika lake from Sabulia to Ghantasila when the tragedy struck. The boat capsized near Rambha and all the passengers fell into water. Locals immediately started rescuing the passengers. They successfully rescued 15 passengers but 10 were initially missing. Later, three dead bodies were found.
As of now, three 108 ambulances, ODRAF teams and fire services teams have arrived at the site to carry out rescue operations.
Of the rescued, 13 have been admitted to medicals. While 11 have been admitted to Berhampur based MKCG medical college and hospital, one is in Rambha medical and another in Khallikote medical. “Four of the rescued have died at MKCG medical,” said Ganjam Collector Prem Chand Chaudhary.
Ganjam ASP informed that 24 men and women and five children were aboard the boat and were going to a picnic at Ghantasila after attending a wedding last night. All passengers were from Sabulia.
While CM Patnaik expressed grief and announced ex gratia, he also assured that all expenses for the treatment of the injured will be borne by the government.
