BJP’s N Biren Singh sworn in as Chief Minister of Manipur

Imphal: BJP leader Nongthombam Biren Singh took oath on Wednesday as Manipur chief minister along with eight members of his new cabinet at the Raj Bhawan in Imphal.

Y Joykumar Singh of the National People’s Party was sworn in as the deputy chief minister.

This comes after Governor Najma Haptullah on Tuesday invited the BJP-led coalition to form the government in the state.

However, BJP president Amit Shah, Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu and BJP National General Secretary Shri Ramlal return to Delhi after a technical glitch in his flight. They were on their way to attend N. Biren Singh’s oath taking ceremony in Imphal today.

Biren Singh has elected to lead the 21 member BJP legislature party, Singh staked claim to form the government at the head of a motley coalition after outgoing Congress chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh resigned on Monday.

Biren has submitted to governor Najma Heptullah a list of 32 MLAs—Manipur has a 60-member assembly and letters of support from P A Sangma’s party NPP (4 MLAs), NPF (4), LJP (1), independent Ashab Uddin and T Robindro Singh, who won on a Trinamool ticket.

However, Congress, as the single largest party, is also in the race with 28 legislators.
