Agartala: The 48-year-old state BJP President Biplab Kumar Deb today took oath as the Chief Minister of Tripura at a grand ceremony which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national president Amit Shah and party leaders.
In the new government, senior BJP leader Jishnu Debbarma will assist Mr Deb as his deputy. The BJP’s arrival in Tripura following a spectacular electoral victory is being seen as a humiliating defeat for the unchallenged 25-year rule of the Left.
Governor Tathagata Roy administered the oath of office and secrecy to Deb and other ministers.
Deb comes from a political background, as his father Haradhan Deb was a senior leader of Bharatiya Jan Sangh (BJS) in Tripura.
The state BJP chief was initiated in public life by his family when he joined the local unit of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Tripura. But he was first noticed by the RSS and BJP leaders in the late 1990s when he came to Delhi for three years.
