Keonjhar: Three persons were killed and seven others seriously injured, including two forest officials, in a bear attack Monday morning at Bhalupahadi Sahi in Khadiadiha village in Keonjhar district of Odisha.
As the bear did not move and kept sitting next to the body of a deceased despite all efforts by the forest officials to drive it away, the angry locals somehow caught the animal and killed it.
The deceased have been identified as Bidesi Mahakud (forest department watcher) and Naba Kishore Nayak. The third person died at the hospital while undergoing treatment and has not been identified yet.
According to reports, Naba Kishore encountered a wild bear when he had gone to his garden this morning. The wild animal attacked and dragged him to a pit.
Nayak raised alarm following which his two sons – Paramananda and Chandra rushed to rescue their father; however, they sustained grievous injuries in the attack while Naba Kishore reportedly died on the spot.
Forests officials rushed to the spot getting information and launched a drive to trap the animal with help of locals. However, two of the officials along with a few other villagers sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital.
Sources said despite numerous attempts by the forest officials to drive away the animal, the bear did not leave the spot and was sitting beside the body of Naba Kishore following which irate villagers beat it to death.
