Bhubaneswar: Hackers create havoc among the banks of twin city after they hacked several off-site machines and burgled huge amount of cash.
The hackers though failed, made an attempt for a cyber theft at Corporation Bank ATM counter on Sunday near Vivekananda Marg in Bhubaneswar.
However, Commissionerate Police revealed that a similar theft attempt has been reported in the city on February 24. The robbery received attention after over Rs 17 lakh was burgled from Corporation Bank ATM in Cuttack on Saturday.
As per sources, Police commissioner Y B Khurania convened a meeting on Sunday with authorities of all the banks, Officers of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and ATM service providers to seek a hi-tech security system for avoiding hackers from cracking the ATM software.
The series thefts were attempted on ATM machines of a particular manufacturer named NCR while Mphasis was reported as service provider for the off-site machines.
While the service providers have an online monitoring system for ATMs to detect theft, the burglars managed to escape after taking away the cash.
Besides this, the service providers and banks have been asked to upgrade the operating system to Windows 7 for strengthening the security firewall.
