Bhubaneswar: Balasore District Jail, one of the oldest in the state looks poised to be shifted to city outskirts after the long awaited decision caught government’s interest, sources said on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister himself laid out an instruction to the Home Department Principal Secretary Asit Tripathy ordering him to call for an urgent meeting of all the concerned officials under the authority and chalk out a strategy within next seven days to plan shifting of the jail.
The jail established during the British’s rule in 1847 is one of the oldest jail in the country but somehow it has never been renovated and has stayed put in spite of its growing needs in the expanding town.
With population explosion as a big factor coupled with insufficient space in the hullabaloo of the town the jail pose a threat since it homes some of the noted criminals not only from the city but also from across the state.
All this while there has been regular demands from the city denizens to transfer the jail to somewhere else but so far the decision was in the cold storage.
