Asian Games: India settles for bronze in Table Tennis

Jakarta: India’s Table Tennis duo— Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal settled for bronze in mixed doubles table-tennis event after losing to China in the semi-final match at the 18th Asian Games on Wednesday.

Sharath-Manika lost the mixed doubles semifinal to China with final score of 1-4 in the sets of 9-11, 5-11, 13-11, 4-11 and 8-11.  India faced China’s Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha.

Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal managed to stay with the Chinese opponents’ score in the fifth game; first at 3-3 and then 6-6. However, Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha raced ahead just near the end and closed the game at 11-8.

Earlier, Sharath-Manika won the quarter-finals against North Korean pair An Ji Song and Cha Hyo Sim.

Notably, after going without a medal for 60years, India now has medals in this event.
