Jakarta: Indian men’s hockey team clinched bronze medal after defeating Pakistan by 2-1 in the 18th Asian Games at GBK-Hockey Field here on Saturday.
With bronze in men’s hockey, India’s medal tally reached 69 on the 14th day with 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze.
India started their Asiad campaign strongly by registering big wins over their opponents. India had beaten Indonesia 17-0, Hong Kong 26-0, Japan 8-0, Korea 5-3 and Sri Lanka 20-0 on their journey to the semi-finals. However, India failed to reach the final as they lost to Malaysia in a penalty shoot-out on Thursday. The match ended in a 2-2 stalemate in regulation time, before India lost to Malaysia by 6-7 in the penalty shoot-out.
On the other side, Pakistan lost 0-1 to Japan in another semi-final.
In the 2014 Asian Games, India had beaten Pakistan 4-2 in a shoot-out to win an Asiad Gold in hockey. Prior to that, India defeated Pakistan in 1966 Asian Games to win the coveted gold medal.
India three-time gold medallist while Pakistan has won eight times. Only once have neither India or Pakistan been in the men’s hockey final of Asian Games (2006) and that number goes up to two in Asian Games 2018.
Notably, Birendra Lakra and Amit Rohidas are two players from Odisha who are part of the men’s hockey team playing in 2018 Asian Games.
