Nuapada: In yet another incident, a farmer Jadu Bag of Larka village under Boden block in Nuapada district committed suicide on Tuesday. He died at the Mission Hospital in Khariar while undergoing treatment.
The farmer’s family members said he committed suicide being disheartened by crop loss due to deficit rainfall. The rainfall in Boden block was 31% less in June, 55% less in July and 27% less in August, which drastically affected the crops. By the end of August, the crops in the field had already turned grey.
“My husband had taken Rs 30,000 as loan from private sources to invest in agriculture. The crop failure forced him to migrate to Mumbai, but he could not earn much there to repay the loan. So, he returned distressed and committed suicide after a few days,” said Jadu’s wife Dula.
The BJP and the Congress held a road block at Khariar demanding adequate compensation to Jadu’s widow, who had married a few months ago.
