Berhampur: While the administration has been probing the suicide of a farmer of Madhurchua in Ganjam district, another farmer of the same village has attempted suicide on Tuesday.
The farmer named, Kangali Nayak(aged 55) consumed pesticide at his farm in the morning. After noticing, some locals on their way farms spotted him and alerted his family members. Nayak was rescued and admitted to Rambha government hospital.
After preliminary treatment, he was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital as his condition was critical.
As per family members, Nayak had cultivated cabbage, and tomatoes this season. He had to incur huge loss due to a decline in the price of cabbage in the market. Adding to his woes, his hopes for good harvest of tomatoes were shattered due to crop loss.
He had borrowed around Rs 5 lakh for fertilizer and other expenses from banks and private money lenders. The lenders on several instances postered him for repayment that led him to severe stress.
Nayak’s son Dhaneswar said that he was starving under the stress. He has said that the fall in vegetable prices in the market forced his father to take the extreme step.
