Bhubaneswar: Situation in Malkangiri continues to be grave as two more children succumb to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) raising the death toll to 58 in 39 days. Meanwhile, the state government has appointed an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Malkangiri to check the spread of the JE virus.
Two children under treatment at the district headquarters hospital died on Monday morning increasing the toll to 58 child deaths. While the blame game between Centre and State government continues regarding the delay in action in prevention and check on spread of the virus in Malkangiri, the situation seems to be worsening with more deaths day after day. The Odisha government has appointed Panchayati Raj Deputy Secretary Nruparaj Sahu as OSD to monitor the situation in the JE affected district where he will camp for two months and co-ordinate with the various departments involved in tackling the virus break out.
On Sunday, the ADMO Malkangiri had informed that of the total deaths 20 were caused by JE while the rest were owing to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome. In the last 38 days, 182 children were admitted to the district headquarters hospital and 105 have so far been discharged after successful treatment.
