Sorong, Indonesia: In what could be termed as tit for tat, an angry mob has slaughtered nearly 300 crocodiles in Indonesia following the death of a local man by one of the reptiles, authorities said Monday.
The incident occurred when the victim, identified as 48-year-old Sugito, fell into an enclosure at a crocodile farm while looking for grass to feed his livestock, police and conservation officials said.
The revenge killing happened on Saturday in Papua province following the funeral of the man.
Irate over the farm’s location near a residential area, Sugito’s relatives and local residents marched to the local police station, authorities said.
The farm had agreed to pay compensation conveying condolences. But the mob was not satisfied and headed to the crocodile farm armed with knives, machetes, and shovels and slaughtered some 292 crocs, from four-inch-long babies to two-metre adults, authorities said.
Authorities said they are investigating and may lay criminal charges.
