Achal Kumar Joti appointed as new Chief Election Commissioner of India

New Delhi: The President is pleased to appoint the senior-most Election Commissioner, Achal Kumar Joti as the Chief Election Commissioner in the Election Commission.

Achal Kumar Joti will assume the charge of the office of Chief Election Commissioner with effect from the 6th July, 2017 consequent upon demitting the Office of the Chief Election Commissioner by Dr. Nasim Zaidi on the 5th July, 2017.

64-year-old Joti, who was the chief secretary of Gujarat when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister, will take over as the head of the Election Commission on July 6, a notification issued by the law ministry said.  Zaidi will demit office tomorrow.

Joti, a 1975-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, had joined the three-member poll panel as an election commissioner on May 8, 2015 and would be in office till January 17 next year.
