Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has upgraded 21 high schools meant for scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) students to higher secondary schools in 10 districts where Plus-II science courses will be introduced.
The plus II science courses will commence in the upgraded schools from the current academic year for which the government has appointed 154 junior lecturers.
The move aims at providing quality education to students belonging to SC/ST communities. Tribal dominated Nabarangpur district will have four such upgraded schools where the science courses will be introduced.
Similarly, three high schools each in Koraput and Mayurbhanj district will be upgraded to higher secondary schools, two each in Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Gajapati and Kandhamal, said SC/ST development minister Ramesh Majhi said.
In order to supply teachers to these upgraded schools, the SC/ST department had asked the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) to recruit 230 post-graduate teachers (PGTs) in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Zoology, Odia and English. The OPSC recently selected 154 teachers through competitive examinations.
Notably, plus II science was introduced in 26 schools run by SC/ST development department in 2017-18 academic year.
