Telengana: At least 45 pilgrims were killed while several others injured when a state-run Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus in which they were travelling fell into a gorge in Jagitial district of Telangana on Tuesday.
While locals immediately carried rescue operation, Jagitial Collector and Superintendent of Police Sindhu Sharma along with police forces rushed to the spot for rescue.
According to sources, the incident occurred at around 11.30 am when the bus carrying around 50 pilgrims was returning from Lord Hanuman temple atop Kondagattu hill.
The injured were rescued and were immediately rushed to Jagitial government hospital for treatment. Reportedly, 10 bodies have been recovered so far while rescue operation is underway.
It is suspected that the accident might have took place due to failure of brakes, said a source.
Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao expressed shock over the accident and conveyed his condolences. He directed officials to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured.
He also announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those killed.
